Glenn Phillips

Glenn Phillips reinforced his status as one of New Zealand’s best entertainers with an unbeaten innings on the opening day of the third Test against England at The Oval. Replying after being put into bat on a bowler-friendly wicket, his aggressive but composed innings helped New Zealand finish the day at 291/7.

Glenn Phillips was not out on 49 and played a key role in controlling the innings during the last session. Any of the New Zealand batters would have struggled against England’s disciplined attack but Phillips scored freely and looked confident. His knock blended cautious stroke making with aggressive intent helping the visitors keep up the energy even when scalable wickets fell regularly.

The highlight of the day, however, may have come when Glenn Phillips asked for a pair of sunglasses as he battled bright light bouncing off the sightscreen. During his second outing, shortly after putting them on, he was tested by England fast bowler Jofra Archer and a barrage of quick-scoring bouncers.

Through the final session Phillips was tested by Archer’s pace and aggression. Midway through, a rising delivery caught him on the shoulder and later a bouncer potholed him into the dirt. Glenn Phillips took it all in his stride though doing a thumbs up, aimed towards the New Zealand dressing room which brought smiles from teammates and amongst spectators.

Daryl Mitchell, speaking after the day’s play, hailed his teammate’s mentality and showed confidence in a player who thrives under pressure. Phillips has been the subject of many headlines but Daryl Mitchell described Phillips as “an entertainer” who likes to take on difficult situations and said he wouldn’t change a thing about how Glenn Phillip splays. He also pointed out Phillips’ clarity of thought and that he is looking to focus on every ball he plays.

He had been one of the stars for New Zealand so far during this series. The batsman has had few franchise opportunities lately, but provided his country with some useful runs in the series – including at The Oval. New Zealand have established a good platform heading into Day 2 courtesy to Henry Nicholls unbeaten 83, with the visitors looking to go beyond the 300 mark and post a challenging first INN total.

The Test match remains in the balance after an eventful opening day in London with Glenn Phillips still at the crease and confidence growing in the New Zealand camp.
